School involvement

Serving our parish schools

There are five schools in our Benefice: three Church of England VA Primary Schools, one special school for severely autistic children and an independent prep school for girls.

The village churches have close links with all the schools and the ministry team and parishioners support the schools in a variety of ways:

PRAYING FOR SCHOOLS

Prayer is the best thing churches can do for schools. School life for pupils, staff and head-teachers is increasingly complex and busy. Knowing that there are people out there who are busy caring and praying makes a big difference.

SCHOOL SERVICES

Each of the three Primary schools has two services a term in church, one at the start of term and one at the end. We also celebrate Education Sunday together. The Rector leads Evensong at Hanford School once a term and the girls help lead the worship in the Benefice across the year.

SCHOOL VISITING

Many members of our churches and the Rector go weekly into school to help in the classroom with reading, teaching RE or answering some of the “big questions” children have.

LEADING COLLECTIVE WORSHIP

The Ministry Team regularly leads collective worship or takes assemblies in all our schools. The churches also support Worship Through Song in two of the schools.

CHURCH DAYS/ACTIVITY WEEKS

Our schools engage with the churches in wonderfully imaginative ways. Some schools spend a day having a “Church Explore” day. Other schools take a week to focus on a teaching of Jesus and then display their work in a service.

TAKING CHURCH TO SCHOOL

At least once a year all the churches in the Benefice shut and we take church into school!

SCHOOL GOVERNORSHIP

There are foundation governors at each school from members of our church congregations and the Rector is ex officio governor of all 3 primary schools. Together they serve on the Ethos Committees of each school to ensure the Christian ethos of the school is maintained across every aspect of school life.
